Online Life

Distractions, no thank you

by Katie N., Peter Hobart Elementary School

There are many people who have things like Facebook or Instagram. Though many people like it, plenty of people think it is distracting. Many just don’t have Instagram and may like more passive engagement like YouTube. I personally don’t have Instagram or Facebook and I don’t text.

Social Media: good or bad?

by Tehmi B., Hopkins North Junior High

Today, much of our lives take place online. One thing many people have started to use is social media, such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and many others. There are a lot of options on whether social media benefits us or not. Some people even consider it harmful. When asked on her opinion of social media, Litsi O. said  she thought it was a good way to communicate, but that it could be dangerous because it isn’t hard for people to get a hold of personal information. I also interviewed a volunteer from the YAC named Tom Deegan. I asked for his opinion and he said, “It really depends on the topic.” He said that its a good way for kids today to communicate and chat. But, in his opinion, “It politically is not good because it doesn’t give us anything beneficial.” In conclusion, the online world we live in can be both good and bad.

The Boom of Social Media: Parent Perspectives

by Beatrice G., Clearwater Middle School

As teenagers and young adults, we are growing  up in the boom of social media. We hear stories about celebrities and controversial topics. In this time, it can be difficult as a parent to help your kids deal with this in a positive vs. native manner. I was curious to know the opinions of adults and parents.

One parent I interviewed brought up the positives, mentioning how much easier it was to communicate since texting and FaceTime allowed you to communicate almost anywhere, anytime.

Another parent mentioned how she allowed social media, as long as her kids followed guidelines. She mentioned how she didn’t allow communication during meals. She also talked about how she used celebrities as examples for them.

In conclusion, online lives can be positive and negative and is, in general, a good balance.

Limiting Screen time

by Tyler, Kaposia Elementary School

In my interviews, I met one eleven-year-old who plays 3 to 6 hours of online games a week. It think it can be a little too much, but it is not like playing on the internet 8 hours a day! I usually  play about a half hour a day on a school day, and up to 2 hours on weekend days. A screen can weaken they eyes. That is why I limit my screen time.
